~*~*~*~The Other Kinds of Love challenge~*~*~*~

*If these rules ever get re-posted anywhere (which I would not like to happen), DO NOT alter them in any way. Please link back to this post.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The challenge: Create artwork (stories, pictures, etc.) focused on platonic love rather than romance.
Extra credit! Do it for two characters who get a crazy amount of romance fanwork. For example: Axel/Roxas, Sora/Kairi, Zexion/Demyx, Terra/Aqua, etc.
The most important rule, and the only one I truly care about: NO ROMANCE. The whole point of this challenge is to promote platonic love. There are nit-picky details below, like “Can the main character’s parents at least be in love with each other? o.O” etc., but the main goal should be to focus on platonic love, since romance already gets more than enough attention.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Clarifications on the No Romance thing: Romance for minor characters is fine, as long as it’s very brief or in the background or something. Main character(s) can (preferably briefly) think about or discuss romance, but should not presently be in a romantic/sexual relationship or have a crush on anyone or be crushed on, or have “unrealized feelings” that they’re trying to deny, etc. It’s fine if they were involved in past romantic relationships, but they should not be during the time the fic takes place. They can have vague plans to acquire a Significant Other in the future, but they shouldn’t be dwelling on or angsting about it.

If you want to make it easier on yourself by having your characters be children or siblings (or animals :p), that’s fine. Basically, the goal is to depict bonds between people that are strong, deep, but entirely platonic.

…You won’t fail the challenge if a main character is in a romantic relationship that is either very briefly or never referenced (as long as the piece focuses on their platonic relationship with a different character), but…try to avoid it if you can.

Minimum word count for stories (not counting author’s notes, titles, etc.) is 100 words. There is no maximum limit.

Although this challenge was designed for Kingdom Hearts, please feel free to work on it for any fandom(s), or even your own original stories if you so wish (but to quote this mod, I “won’t be held responsible for any issues involved if you decide to publish [your original stories] someday”). Crossovers are fine, too.

You may complete the themes out of order, but please indicate the theme number even if it doesn’t correspond to the installment number.

You don’t have to use these prompts, you can make up your own for some or all of the installments. However, if you do change the prompts, PLEASE indicate that you have done so, such as in an author’s note.

All installments should be new. Try not to use older work that happens to fit one of the themes.

I don’t care about being credited for this challenge (just don’t claim false credit for coming up with the challenge yourself, duh!). However, it would be nice if you could link back here so that other people can do the challenge if they want to.

I have so little free time these days, I probably won’t be able to read the fic responses to this, but it would still be cool to know how many people are taking up and making progress on this challenge.

~*~*~*~The Genre Challenge~*~*~*~

*If these rules ever get re-posted anywhere (which I would not like to happen), DO NOT alter them in any way. Please link back to this post.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The challenge: Portray the same story in at least four different genres!
Essentially, you will choose a very basic plot (there are suggestions below), and write it four times, but each installment must clearly be in a different genre.
Don’t just copy/paste your first story and tweak it – the challenge is to actually re-write it to suit each genre.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Although this was conceived as a Kingdom Hearts fanfic writing challenge, you may take it on for any fandom or any media (videos, drawing, poetry, etc.); even non-fanwork if you wish. (However, to quote this mod, I “won’t be held responsible for any issues involved if you decide to publish [your original stories] someday”). Crossovers are fine, too.

You may use the same main character/pairing for each story, or different ones; it’s up to you.

The term “loved one” can refer to a friend, family member, love interest, random person whom the protagonist eventually comes to care about, etc.

For prose, the minimum word count for each installment (not counting author’s notes, titles, etc.) is 200 words. There is no maximum limit.

Feel free to come up with your own plots and/or use genres that are not listed here.

If you like, you may combine this with other challenges (such as a theme challenge). Just make sure that your combo pieces don’t violate the rules of either challenge.

I dislike slash (yaoi, yuri, etc.), so if you include a prominent slash romance pairing, I can’t look at it. (…I’m so swamped with stuff to do that I probably can’t even read platonic love entries. D: ) I’d still be interested to know who is taking on this challenge, though~! :D

Do not claim false credit for coming up with this challenge! >: (
It would be nice if you could link back to this post so that others can take on the challenge if they want to.

Plot suggestions:

The protagonist’s loved one is kidnapped, and the protagonist must rescue her/him.

By the end of the story, the protagonist is forced to choose between two very precious or important people/things/etc.; the protagonist cannot have or save them both.
Or, the protagonist must give up one precious/important thing in order to gain the other.

The protagonist discovers, to his or her dismay, that his or her family/allies/etc. are not what the protagonist thought they were. (For example, that they’re not human, that they’ve done terrible things he or she would never have expected of them, that they’re villains, etc.)

The protagonist’s loved one has joined his/her enemies, and the protagonist must either persuade the loved one back or join the enemy side.

A child has a chance encounter with a weary adult, and inadvertently refreshes/encourages the adult to continue his/her life or mission in better spirits.

The protagonist, under absolutely no obligation to do so, undertakes a task or mission on behalf of someone else who cannot do it themselves.

The protagonist and his/her loved one must both work to accomplish a shared goal, but they must do so without ever seeing each other or having direct contact until the very end.

(Did any of those look familiar to you, KH fans…? ;p)

Genre suggestions:
*Some of these are combinable – for example, it’s possible to write angsty science-fiction, or a romantic western. If you do combine genres, a rule of thumb is that the “adjective” genre can be repeated, but the “noun” genre can’t.

These categorizations are not set in stone, I just categorized them to make it easier. As long as the genres for each installment are significantly different, it’s fine.

“Noun” genres

High fantasy (takes place in an entirely different world)
Contemporary or low fantasy (takes place in our own world)
Science-fiction mostly dealing with outer space, aliens, etc.
Science-fiction contained on Earth
Post-apocalyptic
School story
Animal story (the main characters are all animals)
Steampunk
Detective story
Period pieces for any culture (as long as they’re significantly different, each can count as a separate genre – for example, “Edo Japan,” “Medieval Germany,” etc.)
Mecha (giant humanoid robots piloted by humans)
Superhero or Magical Girl
Crime drama (though don’t let it get too similar to “detective story” if you choose to do both of those)
Career-related (takes place in the world of journalism, filmmaking, modeling, on a horse farm, etc.)
Political drama

*If it’s fanwork, you can use “canon-based” as a genre (as opposed to alternate universe)

“Adjective” genres

Family/friendship platonic love
Dysfunctional family
Humor and/or parody
Drama
Angst
Adventure
Action
Suspense
Romance

~*~*~*~Raberba girl’s How to Train Your Dragon Challenge~*~*~*~

*If these rules ever get re-posted anywhere (which I would not like to happen), DO NOT alter them in any way. Please link back to this post.

I’ve really been wanting to do some HTTYD fanwork in a more structured way, so I started looking for a new challenge to work on, but I couldn’t find any that would be suitable for this purpose, so I finally just made up my own. *sweatdrop*

The entries can be fanfiction, fanart, etc. You can do one piece for each prompt, or you can combine prompts; you can also go out of order. The point of this challenge is to inspire creativity and more HTTYD fanwork. XD

The entries can be any interpretation you like, either light or serious.

This challenge is based on the DreamWorks version of the series, but you can adapt it for the book series if you want to.

If you like, you may combine this with other challenges (such as a theme challenge). Just make sure that your combo pieces don’t violate the rules of either challenge.

Do not claim false credit for coming up with this challenge! >: (
